Most of you should have received some information in the mail regarding the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Generation to Generation: Answer the Call campaign. We are beginning to enter into the public phase of reaching out to all parishioners to ask them to make a sacrificial pledge to the campaign to be paid over five years.
I like you, received a personalized letter from the Cardinal asking for a sacrificial gift. I have always said that I would not ask you to do anything that I myself am not willing to do. After a lot of thought and prayer, I made the first pledge. I pledged $4,000 a year for five years for a total pledge of $20,000. I only mention this to let you know that I fully support this campaign.
Over the decades, I have benefitted from the sacrifices of those that have come before me. During my childhood and my days before entering the seminary, I was a parishioner at St. Salomea, St. Mary of the Assumption (the Pope’s home parish) and St. Victor. Sadly, each of these parishes and schools are now closed, because of changing demographics. Since ordination, I have been a priest and parishioner of St. Alexander, St. Julie Billiart, St. Cajetan and now St. Michael. When I say parishioner I mean that I register, receive envelopes and donate weekly. I learned this from my parents and grandparents who always supported their parishes even during the Great Depression. Even when times were difficult and money was scarce, they supported their parish.
St. Michael has been a parish since 1867. In September, it will be 159 years of spreading the Gospel. We have benefitted from the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, many of your parents and grandparents. It is now our turn to help support the Church so that we, like those before us, can pass on the faith to the generations that will follow us. If we do not do this, who will? St. Michael does not have any debt because those who came before built and paid for the buildings that we now use and perhaps take for granted. We have a church to worship in and buildings to educate our children – buildings that others have sacrificed for. I ask you to join me, in prayerfully considering a sacrificial gift to Generation To Generation: Answer the Call campaign. Some families may not have received their information in the mail. Next weekend, we will have a packet pick-up for those who did not receive a mailing.
Beginning this weekend, we will pray the Generation to Generation prayer during Mass as the concluding prayer to the Universal Prayer (The Prayers of the Faithful.)
Here is the prayer for you to pray at home:
God of abundant and generous mercy, we gratefully acknowledge the many gifts you have given us across the years from the sacrifice of generations before us.
And so, we confidently trust that you will walk with us into the future.
We echo the words of the Blessed Virgin Mary: truly, your mercy is from generation to generation.
Help us now to respond generously to your gifts, as we support our Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago and work to bring faith forward for the generations that follow us.
By your grace and help, let our gifts be a blessing for our children, our grandchildren, and those who follow them.

La mayoría de ustedes ya debería haber recibido por correo información referente a la campaña de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago titulada, De generación en generación: Respondan al llamado. Estamos comenzando a entrar en la fase pública de acercamiento a todos los feligreses para pedirles que hagan una promesa de contribución sacrificial a la campaña, la cual se pagará a lo largo de cinco años.
Como ustedes, recibí una carta personalizada del Cardenal solicitando una ofrenda de sacrificio. Siempre he dicho que no les pediría que hicieran nada que yo mismo no estuviera dispuesto a hacer. Tras mucha reflexión y oración, realicé mi primer compromiso. Me comprometí a aportar $4,000 anuales durante cinco años, sumando un compromiso total de $20,000. Solo menciono esto para que sepan que respaldó plenamente esta campaña.
A lo largo de las décadas, me he beneficiado de los sacrificios de aquellos que me precedieron. Durante mi infancia y los días previos a mi ingreso en el seminario, fui feligrés de Santa Salomé, Santa María de la Asunción (la parroquia natal del Papa) y San Víctor. Lamentablemente, cada una de estas parroquias y escuelas se encuentra hoy cerrada debido a los cambios demográficos. Desde mi ordenación, he sido sacerdote y feligrés de San Alejandro, Santa Julie Billiart, San Cayetano y, ahora, San Miguel. Cuando digo feligrés, me refiero a que me registro, recibo sobres y hago donaciones semanalmente. Aprendí esto de mis padres y abuelos, quienes siempre apoyaron a sus parroquias, incluso durante la Gran Depresión. Aun cuando los tiempos eran difíciles y el dinero escaseaba, ellos apoyaban a su parroquia.
San Miguel ha sido una parroquia desde 1867. En septiembre, cumplirá 159 años de difundir el Evangelio. Nos hemos beneficiado de los sacrificios de aquellos que nos precedieron, muchos de ellos sus padres y abuelos. Ahora es nuestro turno de ayudar a sostener a la Iglesia para que nosotros, al igual que quienes nos antecedieron, podamos transmitir la fe a las generaciones que nos seguirán. Si nosotros no lo hacemos, ¿quién lo hará? San Miguel no tiene deudas, ya que quienes vinieron antes construyeron y pagaron los edificios que ahora utilizamos y que, tal vez, damos por sentados. Contamos con un templo para adorar y con edificios para educar a nuestros hijos; edificios por los cuales otros se han sacrificado. Les pido que se unan a mí en oración para considerar la posibilidad de hacer una donación generosa a la campaña “De generación en generación: Responde al llamado”.

Dios de abundante y generosa misericordia, reconocemos con gratitud los muchos dones que nos has concedido a lo largo de los años, fruto del sacrificio de las generaciones que nos precedieron.
Por ello, confiamos plenamente en que caminarás con nosotros hacia el futuro.
Hacemos nuestras las palabras de la Santísima Virgen María: verdaderamente, tu misericordia se extiende de generación en generación.
Ayúdanos ahora a responder generosamente a tus dones, mientras sostenemos a nuestra Iglesia en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago y trabajamos para transmitir la fe a las generaciones venideras.
Por tu gracia y tu ayuda, que nuestros dones sean una bendición para nuestros hijos, nuestros nietos y aquellos que vendrán después de ellos.
