What is a Prayer shawl?
Knitting a prayer shawl is a completely different experience than knitting just any old shawl. The process is unique due to the intentions of the knitter to infuse healing and good thoughts as well as prayers of protection into the shawl.
The shawl maker begins with prayers and blessings for the recipient and those intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawl is given to the recipient.
As knit and crochet designer Alnaar Jiwani Harnish from leeleeknits.com explains:
“Knitting a prayer shawl is a great way to deliberately set aside time to pray for the person you are creating the shawl for. The calming effect of knitting will put you in the right state of mind for sending out healing energy.”
Hooks and Needles, St. Michael Prayer Shawl Ministry has created hundreds of prayer shawls, hats, scarves, and baby Baptismal blankets over the last 21 years. They have donated blankets to hospitals, hats and scarves to shelters and to servicemen and women and so much more! They not only knitted items but crocheted items as well.
Anyone with an interest in knitting or crocheting are welcome to join. They share patterns, meet new people, and laugh together! They consist of people from aged 10 to age 102! Anyone who already knows how to crochet or knit, or those who want to learn are invited to join us
Hooks and Needles meets twice a month during the day on Tuesdays, from August to June in the West Ministry Room. They also meet in the evening once a month September-October-November, and March-April-May.
Some members are not able to attend our group get-togethers, but make items and deliver them to the parish office.
There is no fee required for a prayer shawl. Cash donations are always appreciated to purchase yarn and other materials.

- Thursday Evenings from 7 PM until 8:30 PM in the Ministry Room East – September 17 – October 15 – November 19 – March 18 – April 15 – May 20
