Year 2019 – RE Blessing Bags for the Homeless

To Our Photo / Video Gallery 2019

JANUARY 2019 (PICTURES) – We began our “Blessing Bags for the Homeless” workshop by learning more with Mary Damiani about how blessed we are everyday. We need to think more about this. We raised our hand as Mary asked, “Who has a house to go to when you leave here? Who has food in their house every day? Who has a bed to sleep in? And a blanket to cover you? Who has water for a bath or shower? Who has a pair of shoes? Who has more than 1 pair?” – Many more questions were asked about clothing items and non-necessities such as toys and electronics.

By talking about our “abundances”, we can think more about how much extra we have, how many sacrifices our parents make for us for the things we have, and how we truly can help those in need just with what we already have in our home.

To create a “Blessing Bag”, each family looked through their drawers, cabinets, and closets at home. They gathered in a bag any extras they had of gently used socks, winter hats, mittens, and scarves. They also gathered in that bag any extras of small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, bars of soap, bandaids, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and individual wrapped snacks or beverage packets. They brought their bag of donations to RE class. We sorted all like items into boxes. Then we each used a gallon size Ziploc bag to collect one of each item, including a prayer card and prayer packet. We each created a card of hope and encouragement to go in the bag too. We will keep our Blessing Bag in our car. When our family sees someone who is homeless, with mom or dad we can approach the person with a smile, hand them the bag, and say “I hope this blesses you. I am praying for you.” We will show Christ to another child of God. After we give our bag to someone in need, we look for more extras in our home and create another Blessing Bag to keep in our car. We can always be ready to bless someone, to give them home, to show them Christ in us!
