Inspired by the International Prayer Shawl Ministry, Hooks and Needles was born in 2005. Talented parishioners share their love of crochet and knitting by making shawls, hats, baby blankets, and scarves. Prayer is infused into every item; prayer for the recipients, for their caretakers, and for the makers of each item. Prayer, especially, that those receiving our gifts will be comforted by something warm, made with love.
Since 2005 we have donated thousands of shawls and hats to parishioners, local hospital cancer and hospice units, the neo-natal unit for struggling newborn infants, to soldiers overseas, Hines VA hospital, Shepherd’s Table, American Heart Association and more.
How You Can Get Involved
Anyone with an interest in knitting or crochet – whether it be novice or advanced – is invited to join us! We share patterns, meet new people, laugh together!
We usually meet twice a month during the day on Tuesdays, from August to June in the West Ministry Room. We also meet in the evening once a month September-October-November, and March-April-May.
Some of our members are not able to attend our group get-togethers, but make items and deliver them to the parish office.
There is no fee required for a prayer shawl. Cash donations are always appreciated to purchase yarn and other materials.
For more information, or to request a prayer shawl, please contact Donna at 708-403-2122 or our Parish Office at 708-349-0903.
